Hiring a General Contractor in Lehigh Acres, Florida
In Florida, general contractors are licensed and regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). Before you hire, verify that any contractor you're considering holds an active license. You can search for a contractor's license status through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's online licensing portal.
Florida recognizes two main contractor license types: certified and registered. A certified contractor holds a certificate of competency and may work anywhere in the state. A registered contractor has met the competency requirements of a specific jurisdiction and may contract only there. Understanding which type applies ensures the contractor is qualified for your project's location and scope.
Any remodeling, addition, or structural work in Lehigh Acres must comply with the Florida Building Code. Most projects require permits before work begins. When you contact a contractor, ask whether they handle the permit process or if you'll coordinate it separately, and confirm they follow current building-code requirements for your type of work.
How do I verify a Florida general contractor's license?
Use the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This will show you whether the license is active and what type it is. [1, 2]
What's the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and can work in any Florida jurisdiction. A registered contractor has met competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction only and cannot work outside that area. Certified licenses begin with the letter C; registered licenses begin with R. [1]
Do I need a permit for my remodeling project in Lehigh Acres?
Most remodeling, addition, and structural work requires a permit. The specific requirements depend on your project scope and local rules. When you hire a contractor, ask whether they obtain permits as part of their service or if you'll handle that step. [3]
What should I ask a potential contractor about Florida building code compliance?
Ask the contractor to confirm they follow the current Florida Building Code for your project type. This is especially important for remodels and additions, which must meet structural and safety standards. A licensed contractor should be familiar with code requirements. [3, 4]
