Hiring a Painter in Jacksonville, Florida
Painting contractors in Florida must hold a license issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), a division of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Contractors are classified as either certified (licensed to work anywhere in the state) or registered (licensed for a specific jurisdiction). You can verify any contractor's license status using the DBPR's online license search at myfloridalicense.com.
Jacksonville's Building Inspection Division enforces the Florida Building Code (currently the 8th Edition, 2023). Most painting work does not require a permit, but some projects—such as extensive alterations or work on certain building types—may trigger inspection requirements. The division's office, located at 214 North Hogan Street, is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For questions about your specific project, you can reach them at 904-255-8500 or email BIDDocuments@coj.net.
How do I check if a painter is licensed in Florida?
Visit the DBPR online license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name or license number. A licensed painter will have either a certified (occupation code starting with C) or registered (starting with R) license. [1, 2]
Will my painting project need a permit in Jacksonville?
Many painting projects do not require a permit. However, if your project involves structural work, extensive alterations, or work on certain building types, a permit may be required. Contact Jacksonville's Building Inspection Division at 904-255-8500 to confirm for your specific job. [5]
What should I ask a painter before hiring?
Ask for their state license number and verify it through the DBPR license search. Confirm whether any permits are needed for your project and who is responsible for obtaining them. Discuss surface preparation, paint products, project timeline, and insurance coverage. [1, 5]
