In Florida, painters who work as contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Before hiring a painter, verify their license status through the DBPR's online license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or business location to confirm they are properly licensed.

Florida distinguishes between certified contractors, who can work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who may only work in specific jurisdictions. When you contact a painter for a quote, ask whether they hold a state license and request their license number so you can verify it independently.

Painting work in Florida is subject to the Florida Building Code. While interior and exterior painting projects often do not require permits, certain specialized work—such as waterproofing or structural coatings—may fall under code requirements. Ask your painter whether permits are needed for your specific project.
