General contractors in Florida must hold either a certified or registered license from the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and can work anywhere in Florida; a registered contractor must fulfill competency requirements for the specific jurisdiction where they work. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status and type through the DBPR online license search at myfloridalicense.com.

Florida's building code applies to construction and renovation projects. Any work that requires permits or involves structural changes, mechanical systems, or code-compliance updates falls under these regulations. Ask your contractor about their familiarity with current code requirements and whether your project will need permits—this varies by scope and location within Jacksonville Beach.

When requesting a bid, ask whether the contractor holds a valid Florida construction license, what license type it is, and whether they self-perform work or use subcontractors. Confirm they carry workers' compensation insurance and can provide references from similar projects. Request a written scope of work and timeline before signing any agreement.
