Hiring a Plumber in Fort Myers, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board oversees plumber licensing. Before you hire, verify that your plumber holds an active state license. You can search the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online licensing portal by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their status and standing.
Plumbers in Florida are classified as either certified or registered contractors. A certified contractor can work anywhere in the state; a registered contractor is limited to specific jurisdictions where they have registered. When you call, ask which type of license your plumber holds so you know their scope.
Plumbing work in Florida must comply with the Florida Building Code. Most residential plumbing jobs require permits—ask your plumber whether a permit is needed for your project and who will handle the application and inspections.
How do I verify a plumber's Florida license?
Visit the DBPR online license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm they are currently licensed and in good standing. [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered plumber license?
A certified contractor can work anywhere in Florida without additional jurisdiction approval. A registered contractor has been approved only for specific jurisdictions and can only contract in those areas. [1]
Do I need a permit for plumbing work in Fort Myers?
Most plumbing projects require a permit under the Florida Building Code. Ask your plumber whether a permit applies to your job and confirm they will obtain it or help you do so. [3]
