Painters in Florida fall under the state's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). Most painting work requires either a certified or registered contractor license. Before hiring, verify your painter's license status through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation online license search.

When you call a painter about your project, ask whether they hold a current Florida contractor license and for which type of work. Licensed contractors are designated by an occupation code beginning with C (certified, valid statewide) or R (registered, valid only in the jurisdiction where issued). You can confirm their status and check for any disciplinary history on the DBPR website.

Some painting projects may require permits depending on the scope and location. Ask your painter whether permits apply to your work and who handles the permitting process. Florida building code compliance is required for all construction work, including interior and exterior painting with structural or safety implications.
