Hiring a Painter in Fort Myers, Florida
In Florida, painting contractors must hold a license from the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). Before hiring a painter, verify their license status through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This step protects you by confirming the contractor is authorized to work in your area.
Florida's building code requirements govern interior and exterior work. While residential painting may not require a permit in all cases, some projects—such as those involving structural changes or specific finishes—may fall under local code. Contact your Fort Myers city building department or ask your painter whether your project needs a permit before work begins.
When speaking with a painter like CertaPro Painters, ask about their license type and number, their experience with your specific project, and what your estimate includes. A detailed estimate should outline materials, labor scope, timeline, and any prep work planned.
How do I verify a painter's Florida license?
Visit the DBPR online license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city to confirm their license is active and in good standing. [1, 2]
Do I need a permit for a painting project in Fort Myers?
Many residential painting projects do not require permits, but some work may fall under Florida's building code. Ask your painter or contact your local building department to confirm whether a permit is needed for your specific job. [3, 4]
What license type should a painter hold in Florida?
The Construction Industry Licensing Board issues certified and registered contractor licenses. Certified contractors can work statewide, while registered contractors are limited to specific jurisdictions. Your painter should be able to tell you their license type and number. [1]
