Hiring a General Contractor in Fort Myers, Florida
In Florida, general contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. There are two main license types: certified contractors, who can work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who may work only in the jurisdictions where they are registered. Before hiring any contractor, verify their license status using the DBPR online license search tool.
You can search for a contractor's license by name, license number, city, or county on the DBPR website. This search will confirm whether the contractor holds an active license and what type it is. Always check the license status of any contractor you are considering — it takes only a few minutes and protects you.
Florida building codes apply to construction and renovation work. The Florida Building Code Online portal provides resources, amendments, and guidance if you have questions about code requirements for your project.
