Hiring a Painter in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
In Florida, painting contractors must be licensed by the state if they undertake work for compensation that involves construction, repair, alteration, or improvement to buildings or structures. To verify whether a painter holds a valid license, you can search the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's license database at myfloridalicense.com. Contractors are designated as either certified (can work anywhere in the state) or registered (limited to specific jurisdictions).
When hiring a painter, ask whether they hold a current state license and what type it is. You can confirm their status yourself using the DBPR online search tool by name, license number, city, or license type. This ensures you're working with a contractor who meets Florida's competency requirements.
Florida building codes apply to all painting and related work. If your project involves structural changes, drywall repair, or work on buildings over three stories, code compliance becomes especially important. Ask your painter whether permits are needed for your specific job and how they stay current with Florida building standards.
How do I check if a painter is licensed in Florida?
Visit myfloridalicense.com and use the license search tool. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type. The search will show you whether their license is current and active. [1, 2]
What types of contractor licenses exist in Florida?
Florida issues certified and registered licenses. A certified contractor can work anywhere in the state, while a registered contractor may only work in the jurisdiction where they registered. Both must meet state competency requirements. [1]
Do I need a permit for interior painting work?
Permit requirements depend on the scope of your project. Interior painting alone typically does not require a permit, but if your project includes drywall repair, structural changes, or work on larger buildings, a permit may be required. Ask your painter to clarify what permits apply to your job. [3]
What should I ask a painter about Florida building code compliance?
Ask whether the painter is familiar with the Florida Building Code and whether your project requires code compliance. If your work involves drywall repair, structural elements, or buildings over three stories, code compliance is especially important. The painter should be able to explain how they ensure their work meets code standards. [1, 3]
