Hiring a Painter in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
In Florida, painters fall under the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The state distinguishes between certified and registered contractors. A certified contractor holds a certificate of competency from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and may work anywhere in Florida without meeting individual jurisdiction requirements. A registered contractor fulfills competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may only contract in that jurisdiction. Before hiring, verify which type of license your painter holds—this affects where they can legally work on your project.
You can verify any contractor's license status through the Florida DBPR online license search portal. Search by the contractor's name, license number, or license type to confirm their current standing and check for any disciplinary history. This step takes minutes and protects you from hiring someone operating without proper credentials.
Florida painting work must comply with the Florida Building Code. Your painter should be familiar with current code requirements for any drywall repair, interior or exterior work, or surface preparation on your property. When you call Estevan Painting Inc. and Pressure at (954) 822-0888 or visit during their hours—Monday through Saturday, 7 AM to 6 PM—ask whether they hold a state license and what type, so you know they meet Florida's standards for your job.
How do I look up a painter's Florida license?
Visit the Florida DBPR license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or license type. The portal shows current licensing status and any disciplinary records. [2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate of competency and may work in any Florida jurisdiction. A registered contractor meets requirements for a specific jurisdiction only and may contract only in that area. Certified contractors have codes starting with C; registered contractors with R. [1]
Do I need a permit for interior painting in Fort Lauderdale?
Permit requirements vary by project scope and location. Ask your painter whether a permit is needed for your specific work, and consult your local Fort Lauderdale building department if the painter is unsure. [3, 4]
What building-code issues should I ask a painter about?
Your painter should be familiar with the Florida Building Code for any drywall repair, surface preparation, interior or exterior work, and finishing. When hiring, ask whether they work to current Florida Building Code standards. [3, 4]
Is it safe to hire a painter without a Florida license?
No. Florida law requires painters to be licensed as contractors under the Construction Industry Licensing Board. Always verify the license before hiring. [1]
What questions should I ask when I call a painter?
Ask for their license type (certified or registered), request their license number so you can verify it online, confirm they work to Florida Building Code standards, and ask whether your specific project requires a permit. [1, 2, 3]
