In Florida, landscapers who take on certain work must be licensed by the state's Construction Industry Licensing Board. The board regulates contractors across the state, and you can verify whether a landscaper holds a valid license before hiring. Florida distinguishes between certified contractors, who hold a certificate of competency and can work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who can only work in specific jurisdictions where they've met local requirements.

To check a landscaper's license status, use the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name or license number. This search confirms whether they're properly licensed and in good standing.

Before hiring, ask whether a license is required for your specific project and verify it through the DBPR portal. Florida's Building Code governs construction work, so discuss whether permits apply to your landscaping plans with both your local authority and the contractor.
