In Florida, general contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The board oversees two main license types: certified contractors, who hold a statewide certificate of competency and can work in any Florida jurisdiction, and registered contractors, who register for specific jurisdictions and may contract only where their registration applies. Both types are identified by occupation codes—certified contractors by a code beginning with C, registered contractors by one beginning with R.

Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status using the DBPR's online license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or license type. All construction work in Florida must comply with the Florida Building Code. Homeowners should confirm that their contractor understands local Fort Lauderdale code requirements and will obtain necessary permits.

Ask the contractor whether they are certified or registered, which license type applies to your project scope, and that they carry the appropriate coverage. The Construction Policy Tracking Database, maintained by the Division of Workers Compensation, shows each contractor's current workers' compensation status—a useful checkpoint before signing a contract.
