In Florida, general contractors must be licensed through the Construction Industry Licensing Board, which is part of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). You can verify any contractor's license and disciplinary history by searching the DBPR online licensing portal at myfloridalicense.com. Simply search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm the license is current and in good standing.

Florida recognizes two main contractor license types: certified contractors, who may work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who may only work in the jurisdictions where they are registered. You can ask your contractor which type they hold and confirm this through the license search.

Most construction projects in Florida require a permit before work begins. The specific permit requirements depend on your project scope and local codes. Before hiring, confirm with your contractor that they understand the permit process for your job and will obtain all necessary permits.
