Florida's Electrical Contractors Licensing Board oversees licensing and regulation of electrical contractors in the state. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds an active license—Florida requires it. The most common license type for general electrical work is EC (Electrical Contractor), which allows the holder to install, repair, alter, design, and maintain electrical wiring, fixtures, and systems in homes and businesses. Use the state's online license search tool at myfloridalicense.com to confirm your contractor's license number and status.

When you contact an electrician, ask to see proof of their current Florida license and confirm the license number matches state records. Florida law requires permits for most electrical work. Your contractor should be able to explain what permits your project needs and handle the permitting process. The Florida Building Code governs electrical installations in the state, so work must comply with current code standards.

Ask your electrician about their experience with your specific job type—whether it is new wiring, a repair, a remodel, or a generator installation. Request a detailed estimate in writing before work begins. A reputable contractor will be transparent about scope, timeline, and cost.
