Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Boca Raton, Florida
In Florida, HVAC contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Before hiring, verify that a contractor holds the proper state license by using the DBPR's online license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type to confirm their credentials and check for any disciplinary history.
Florida distinguishes between certified contractors, who can work in any jurisdiction statewide, and registered contractors, who may work only in the jurisdictions where they are registered. Ask your contractor which type of license they hold and confirm it applies to Boca Raton. All work must comply with the Florida Building Code, which governs construction standards and safety.
When evaluating an HVAC contractor, ask about their license status, experience with projects similar to yours, and what permits and inspections your specific job will require. Confirm their insurance coverage and get a written estimate before work begins.
How do I check an HVAC contractor's license in Florida?
Visit the DBPR's license search portal at myfloridalicense.com and search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This confirms their license status and allows you to review any disciplinary records. [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a statewide license and can work in any Florida jurisdiction. A registered contractor is licensed only in specific jurisdictions and may not work outside them. Ask which type your contractor holds to ensure they can work in Boca Raton. [1]
Will my HVAC job require permits and inspections?
Most HVAC work in Florida must comply with the Florida Building Code and local permit requirements. Ask your contractor what permits are necessary for your specific project and who will handle the inspection process. [3, 4]
What questions should I ask an HVAC contractor before hiring?
Confirm their license type and that it's valid for Boca Raton, ask about their experience with your type of work, discuss what permits and inspections apply, verify their insurance coverage, and request a written estimate. [1, 2]
