Florida requires HVAC contractors to be licensed through the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR). The Construction Industry Licensing Board oversees the licensing and regulation of contractors. Contractors are classified as either certified (designated by a code beginning with C) or registered (designated by a code beginning with R). A certified contractor can work in any jurisdiction in the state, while a registered contractor may only work in the jurisdiction for which they are registered.

Before hiring a contractor, verify their license status through the DBPR online license search portal at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp. You can search by contractor name, license number, city, or license type. This search allows you to confirm the contractor's current licensing status and credentials.

HVAC work in Florida must comply with the Florida Building Code. Most residential HVAC projects will require permits and inspections to ensure the work meets code requirements. Ask your contractor whether permits are required for your specific project and whether they will obtain them as part of their service.
