Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Boca Raton, Florida
In Florida, HVAC contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), which is part of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The board regulates contractors and issues two main types of licenses: certified and registered. A certified contractor holds a state certificate of competency and may work anywhere in Florida; a registered contractor meets local competency requirements and may contract only in the jurisdiction where registered. Both are regulated under Florida's construction licensing system.
Before hiring an HVAC contractor, verify their license status through the Florida DBPR online license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This check confirms the contractor is in good standing and legally authorized to perform work. The CILB also maintains records of disciplinary actions and license history, which you can review to assess reliability.
Florida Building Code requires that HVAC work meet current standards for safety, efficiency, and installation. Most residential HVAC jobs require a permit, and inspectors will verify that work complies with the code. Ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your specific project and whether they will handle the application and inspection coordination.
What license types do Florida HVAC contractors hold?
HVAC contractors in Florida are licensed as either certified or registered. Certified contractors hold a state certificate of competency and can work anywhere in Florida. Registered contractors have met competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may only work in that area. [1]
How do I verify an HVAC contractor's license?

Do I need a permit for HVAC work in Florida?
Most HVAC work in Florida requires a permit under the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should advise whether your specific project needs one and will typically handle the permit application and inspection. [3]
What should I ask an HVAC contractor before hiring?
Ask whether they are certified or registered in Florida, request their license number, confirm they will obtain any required permits, and verify they understand current Florida Building Code requirements for your type of work. [1, 2, 3]
Can a registered HVAC contractor work outside their licensed jurisdiction?
No. Registered contractors are licensed only for the specific jurisdiction in which they registered. Certified contractors, by contrast, may work anywhere in Florida. [1]
Where can I file a complaint against an HVAC contractor?
You can file a complaint through the Florida DBPR website at myfloridalicense.com. The Construction Industry Licensing Board investigates complaints and takes disciplinary action when warranted. [2]
