Hiring an Electrician in Boca Raton, Florida
Florida's Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board regulates electricians in the state. The board oversees licensing, discipline, and rule-making for the trade. Electrical contractors in Florida must hold one of several license types depending on their scope of work. A general Electrical Contractor (EC) can install, repair, alter, add to, or design electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, and conduit, including systems within plants and substations.
Before hiring an electrician, verify their license through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search portal. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or by city or county. This search confirms the contractor is licensed and in good standing. Always ask your electrician to provide their license number so you can confirm it.
Electrical work in Florida is subject to the Florida Building Code. Work requiring permits must comply with current code standards. Ask your electrician whether your project requires a permit and inspection—most residential electrical jobs do. Your contractor should handle the permit process or clearly explain what you need to do.
What is an Electrical Contractor license in Florida?
An Electrical Contractor (EC) holds a state license authorizing them to conduct business in the electrical trade. They are qualified to install, repair, alter, add to, or design electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduit, and electrical installations and systems. This is the broadest residential and commercial license type. [1]
How do I verify an electrician's license in Florida?
Use the DBPR Online Services license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or by city or county. The portal shows whether the license is current and in good standing. [2]
Do I need a permit for electrical work?
Most electrical work in Florida requires a permit and inspection to comply with the Florida Building Code. Ask your electrician whether your project needs one and who will handle the permit application. [3, 4]
What should I ask an electrician before hiring?
Ask for their license number and verify it through the DBPR. Confirm they are licensed as an Electrical Contractor (EC) or other applicable type. Ask whether your project requires a permit and inspection, and clarify who manages that process. [1, 2]
