In California, landscaping contractors must hold a state license under the Contractor's State License Board (CSLB). A C-27 Landscaping Contractor classification covers landscape design, installation, and maintenance work. Before you hire, verify the contractor's license on the CSLB website by searching for their license number or business name.

Building permit requirements vary by city and county. The City of Los Angeles and other municipalities in the Sherman Oaks area have their own building departments. Check with your local building department to determine whether your project—whether it's patio design, shade structures, or hardscaping—requires a permit. Many outdoor living installations do not require permits, but it depends on the scope and type of work.

When selecting a contractor, ask to see their current license and verify it on the CSLB website. Discuss your project scope clearly and get a written contract that outlines the work, timeline, and cost before work begins.
