California requires building permits for many painting and related work. According to the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), no building or structure may be erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed, converted or demolished unless a permit has first been obtained from the building official. Code requirements vary in different cities and counties around the state. Check with your local San Rafael building department to find out what's needed for your specific project.

Painters in California must hold a C-33 Painting and Decorating Contractor license. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status through the CSLB online system. You can search by license number (found on the contractor's plastic pocket license) or by business name. This check will show you the license status and any complaint disclosures.

When selecting a painter, CSLB recommends reviewing the contract carefully and understanding the scope of work, timeline, and payment terms. Ask your contractor about their licensing status and request their license number so you can verify it independently. Always check your local building department about permit requirements before work begins.
