Before hiring a painter in San Francisco, check whether your project needs a building permit. California Building Standards Code requires a separate permit before any structure or part of one is erected, constructed, altered, repaired, or improved. Permit requirements vary by city and county, so contact your local building department to find out what applies to your work. The San Francisco Building Department can tell you whether your painting or remodeling job requires a permit before you move forward.

Painting and decorating work in California is classified under the C-33 license type. When you hire a contractor, verify that they hold the correct state license. You can check any contractor's license status—including complaint history—using the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) online lookup tool. Enter the contractor's license number, business name, or the owner's name to confirm they are properly licensed.

Before signing a contract with any painter, CSLB recommends reviewing the agreement carefully and understanding what the work covers, the timeline, and the payment terms. Ask your contractor about their experience with projects like yours and whether they will handle any necessary permitting. Get estimates in writing from more than one contractor so you can compare scope, materials, and price.
