In California, landscapers work under the Contractor State License Board (CSLB). Landscaping contractors hold a C-27 license classification. Before you hire a landscaper, you should verify their license status through the CSLB online tool to confirm they are properly licensed and to check for any complaints against them.

To look up a landscaper's license, visit the CSLB website and search by license number or business name. Each contractor's license will show an 8-digit number. If you have the contractor's name, you can also search by business name—if the name contains a first and last name, enter the last name first. The search will disclose the license status and any complaints.

Some landscaping projects require building permits, while others do not. Permit requirements vary by city and county in California. It is your responsibility to check with your local San Francisco building department to determine whether your specific project needs a permit. A licensed landscaper can also advise you on whether permits apply to your work.
