California requires contractors to be licensed. Landscapers in California hold a C-27 Landscaping Contractor license, a classification under the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Before hiring any landscaper, verify their license with the CSLB online license check tool, which lets you search by license number, contractor name, or individual name. This check will show you the current status of their license and any complaint disclosures.

Depending on the scope of your project, you may need a building permit from your local San Francisco building department. California Building Standards Code requires a separate permit for most work involving construction, alteration, or improvement of structures. Contact your local building department early to determine what permits apply to your landscape project.

When selecting a landscaper, ask about their licensing, insurance coverage, contract terms, and scope of work. Get written quotes from multiple contractors and review any contract carefully before signing.
