California requires plumbers to hold a state license. In California, plumbers are classified as C-36 Plumbing Contractors. Before hiring any plumber, verify their license status through the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) online tool. You can search by license number or business name to confirm the license is active and check complaint disclosure information.

Building permits are required for most plumbing work in California. Code requirements vary by city and county, so check with your local building department—in North Hollywood, that is the City of Burbank or the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety depending on jurisdiction—to determine what permits your project needs. A licensed plumber should handle permit requirements as part of the job.

When you hire a plumber, ask them to provide their license number upfront, confirm they will obtain any required permits, and get a written estimate before work begins. Request references, clarify warranty terms for any new equipment or repairs, and verify their insurance coverage.
