California's Contractors State License Board (CSLB) classifies general contractors into several types. A General Building Contractor (B) can handle a broad range of construction and remodeling work. A Residential Remodeling Contractor (B-2) specializes in residential remodels. Other specialty licenses exist for flooring (C-15) and roofing (C-39). Before hiring, verify which license type the contractor holds and confirm their active status through CSLB's online license checker.

All building or structure work in California requires a separate permit from your local building department unless exempted by code. Requirements vary by city and county, so contact your local building department to confirm what applies to your project. Your contractor should guide you through the permit process.

When selecting a contractor, ask about their license type, verify it with CSLB, review the contract terms and binding agreements, and understand what work requires a permit. This checklist ensures you hire a qualified, accountable contractor for your remodeling or construction project.
