In California, HVAC work typically falls under the C-20 classification (Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning Contractor) when performed by a licensed contractor. Before hiring, check with your local building department to determine if your project requires a building permit. Code requirements vary by city and county, so permit needs depend on the scope of work and your location within the Hayward area.

You can verify a contractor's license status through the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) online. Search by license number (shown on the contractor's pocket license) or by business name. This check will show you the license status and any complaint history. Always review the license information before signing a contract.

When hiring an HVAC contractor, ask about their license classification, confirm they carry appropriate insurance, and request references. Discuss whether your specific project—repair, replacement, or new installation—will need a permit, as your contractor should be familiar with local requirements.
